As part of my Burning Gas series, Country Store was inspired by the stories my husband often shared about his childhood in Middle Georgia. He fondly recalled walking dusty roads with friends to the local store for cold Coca-Cola, Moon Pies, pork rinds, and salted peanuts—a place that served not just goods, but gathering. It was the heartbeat of the community.

These humble country stores once stood at the center of Southern life, offering everything from gasoline and tobacco to farm-fresh eggs and milk. Though many now sit abandoned, their walls still whisper stories of laughter, connection, and simpler times.

This particular store, with its rusted vending machine and aging barbecue pit, holds onto its character through the passage of time. One day, the wild growth of weeds and kudzu may swallow its frame completely. But for now, it stands—weathered, dignified, and quietly proud.
